Year 3 Maths · Telling time
Year 3 telling time worksheet
Move between clock hands, digital notation and everyday durations. This worksheet separates reading a time from finding how long something lasts. The short intervals stay within familiar hours so learners can count forward rather than use a written subtraction procedure.

What you'll practise
A method to use
- Read the minute hand using five-minute steps around the clock.
- Check the hour hand, including whether it has moved between two hour marks.
- For a duration, count forward from the start to the finish and label the answer in minutes.
See a worked example
A clock shows half past two. Write the digital time.
- Half past means 30 minutes after the hour; the minute hand points to 6.
- The hour hand is halfway from 2 to 3. The time is 2:30.
A mistake to watch for
The hour hand moves gradually. When it is between 4 and 5, the hour is still 4 until the minute hand completes the hour.

- 4:30
The minute hand points to 6, meaning 30 minutes. The hour hand is between 4 and 5, so the time is 4:30.
- 7:15
A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes, so quarter past seven is 7:15.
- 3:30 pm
Count forward 20 minutes from 3:10 pm to 3:30 pm.
- 25 minutes
From 10:20 to 10:40 is 20 minutes, then 5 more minutes to 10:45. Total: 25 minutes.
- 8:45
The minute hand at 9 means 45 minutes. The hour hand is approaching 9 but has not reached it: 8:45.
- 30 minutes
An hour contains 60 minutes. Half of 60 is 30, not 50.
For parents and teachers
Use an analogue clock with movable hands if available. Ask which hand provides the hour and which provides the minutes. Encourage counting forward on the duration questions and checking whether the result is sensible. Avoid treating these short practice tasks as a speed test.
