Year 7: explain the relationship, then answer
The transition to secondary learning brings more questions that ask why a method fits. Start with one of three focused lessons: identify a percentage whole, preserve a ratio, or connect clues in a narrative. Each lesson offers three free questions with feedback and optional hints.
Year 7 Maths
Begin with percentage representations, then use ratio parts and unit rates to compare quantities.
Year 7 English
Use a short original narrative to distinguish direct information, supported inference and speculation.
What to notice
The same number or phrase can play different roles. A percentage may describe a saving rather than a price. A story detail may support an inference without proving every possible explanation.
What to do
Choose the area that matches the current difficulty. Read its worked example, attempt one question and compare your explanation with the feedback. Move to the next lesson when you can describe the method without copying it.
Why it works
A small, understood method is easier to transfer than a large set of guessed answers. Checking your explanation helps distinguish a reliable process from a lucky selection.
Work through an example
A learner finds 20% of $50 as $10. Has the question been answered?
- If the question asks for the saving, $10 is the requested quantity.
- If it asks for the discounted price, subtract the saving to obtain $40.
- The calculation is the same starting step; the wording determines whether another step is needed.
A common mistake
Treating every task as a speed exercise can conceal whether the learner understands the relationship. Use an untimed explanation before attempting a timed practice session.
A strategy to try
Keep a short note of a useful check: name the whole, rebuild the ratio total, or quote the clue. Reuse that check when the numbers or story change.
For parents and carers
These selected pages support the move into secondary reasoning without presenting a complete Year 7 syllabus. Let the learner choose a starting point and ask how the feedback changes their method. Year 7 NAPLAN preparation is available separately; it is not a requirement for using these lessons.
