Year 8: make each step defensible

Year 8 practice can connect procedures with the reasons behind them. This collection concentrates on preserving equality in equations, selecting meaningful data summaries and explaining the effect of persuasive language. Choose a lesson for a focused practice session rather than attempting every topic at once.

Year 8 Maths

Solve equations by preserving equality and compare the mean and median when a dataset contains an outlier.

Year 8 English

Analyse inclusive wording, qualified claims and the evidence behind a proposal.

What to notice

A tidy calculation can still misrepresent a dataset, just as an effective phrase can lack supporting evidence. Ask both whether a step is valid and whether it answers the intended question.

What to do

Write a brief justification before checking an option. In algebra, name the operation on both sides. In statistics, connect the result with the data. In English, connect a quoted phrase with its likely effect on the audience.

Why it works

These checks make otherwise hidden assumptions visible. They also provide a useful starting point when feedback disagrees with your answer: locate the first unsupported step.

Work through an example

A dataset has four small values and one very large value. Must the mean describe a typical observation well?

  1. The large observation contributes to the total used by the mean.
  2. Compare the mean with the ordered middle value and the original observations.
  3. A correct mean may still need context when the data are unevenly distributed.

A common mistake

Do not confuse a technique’s name with an explanation. “Inclusive language” or “inverse operation” only helps when you show what it does in the specific example.

A strategy to try

Try a second check: substitute into an equation, reorder a dataset, or replace a persuasive word with a stronger alternative. Observe what changes and explain why.

For parents and carers

Support a short written reason rather than insisting on a long response. These lessons sample algebra, statistics and language analysis; they do not claim complete curriculum coverage. If a prerequisite is uncertain, follow the foundation link before repeating the same problem.
