Year 9: test the model and limit the claim

A useful model simplifies a situation while keeping its important relationships. Year 9 work here examines a constant rate, a changing percentage base and a causal claim built from a before-and-after comparison. Each lesson asks what the representation establishes and what it leaves uncertain.

Year 9 Maths

Read rate and intercept from a linear relationship, then contrast constant-rate models with successive percentage changes.

Year 9 English

Separate an observed outcome from a causal explanation and identify a more informative comparison.

What to notice

Linear growth adds a constant amount for each unit. Percentage change scales the current amount. A measured reduction may be genuine even when its cause has not been isolated.

What to do

Name the relationship before choosing an operation or interpretation. Use a graph or equation for a constant rate, multipliers for successive percentages, and a comparison of conditions when evaluating a causal claim.

Why it works

Selecting the right representation prevents superficial similarities from driving the method. Two price problems may require different models, and two reported observations may not form a fair comparison.

Work through an example

A report says a bill fell after equipment was replaced. What must be checked before attributing the whole fall to the equipment?

  1. Identify the observed change separately from its proposed cause.
  2. Look for differences in usage or other conditions between the periods.
  3. Use comparable conditions or more direct measurement to strengthen the conclusion.

A common mistake

Finding a limitation does not justify the opposite claim. Insufficient evidence of an entire benefit is not evidence that there was no benefit at all.

A strategy to try

State a boundary for your answer. For example, a break-even time applies to the stated cost models, while a lower bill alone does not identify every source of savings.

For parents and carers

Ask which assumption the learner checked. Use the optional Year 9 NAPLAN link for a separate mixed practice context, or revisit the printable percentage foundation before financial calculations. The selected lessons support reasoning rather than predicting an official result.
